I slapped Lillian Jean across the face. She yelped in pain and started to make a run for it out of the forest. Dust flew at me as her foot slipped back. I wasn’t gonna let her get away so easily. “Get back here woman!” I shouted and ran after her. She cried out desperately.
“Help! Someone help me! I’m being attacked by a crazy lady!” Lillian Jean exclaimed. I tackled her before she could reach the end of the forest. She pushed me off and stood up. I got onto my feet and kneed her in the stomach. She gagged and punched me back. Lillian’s punch was so hard, it could’ve knocked my teeth out. I slapped her once again, but she grabbed my arm and threw me to the dirt floor. I scratched my knees and my gown was dirty. However, we were even. Lillian Jean’s dress was tattered and ripped in some places. Her face was decorated with scratches and dirt. She did not look happy with me at all. “Oh, I’m gon’ get you good girl!” She tried to tackle me but I dodged her. I fell forward in the process.
Lillian Jean got up and ran towards town. Once she got there, she yelled and started making a commotion. “Help me! This girl tried to kill me with her filthy hands! Yall’ need to punish her for acting like some wild hog!” She ran to her house and barged in through the door. As I was trying to run after her, I heard a loud slam. My father came out with an irritated look on his face.
“What in the world is going on here? Cassie! Girl, you better get your behind in this house and explain why you were gone for so long!”
After half an hour of explaining what had happened, my dad slammed his fists on the table and furiously shouted,”You did WHAT?!” I was super startled by his volume. I tried to defend myself but all my sentences turned into excuses. “Cassie, we could get sued! You better get out there and tell your friend Lillian Jean you’re well dang sorry!”
“But dad!” He cut me off.
“NOW!” He grabbed my arm and put me outside. I heard him mumble angry words under his breath as he slammed the door loudly. I sat on the bench on my porch and stared up at the sky. The clouds passed by quietly. I didn’t want to apologize. Lillian Jean deserved it! Then, I realized that if we were sued, we could lose our house and all. So, I did what I had to do.
I walked up to Lillian Jean the next day. “Hey, Miz’ Lillian Jean? I wanted to apologize for what happened yesterday. I’m real sorry for what I did. I brought you a present.” Lillian looked at me like I was an some alien. I set a little lavender box in her hands. “Open it!” Inside the box was a necklace with a little charm on it that said ‘Lillian.’ Lillian Jean smiled at me and accepted my apology. She gave me a big hug and I embraced it. From then on, I promised to never hurt her again and we became best friends ever since.
